The bathroom is usually the smallest room in the house.
This means firstly that it can be decorated on a relatively low budget compared to bigger rooms and secondly that at least some of the decoration has to serve a functional purpose as well.
Here are 7 top tips for great bathroom décor.
Keep it simple with the basics
If you are decorating a bathroom from scratch, it’s probably best to keep it simple with the long-term fixtures, which means everything from your steam shower to your floor tiles. Use accessories such as shower curtains and rugs to bring in your personal character and swap them out easily and affordably when you feel like a change.
Splash out on accessories
Sinks and vanities can often be expensive and
time-consuming to replace but faucets and handles can be changed at a much
lower cost and fairly easily.
Replacing
standard accessories with more luxurious counterparts not only looks good, it
can also make a bathroom more pleasant to use.
Make storage stylish
Concealed storage is often at a premium in
bathrooms due to the limited floor space for storage units.
This means that creating meaningful storage
in a bathroom often involves making use of the walls with shelves and
hanging hooks as well as potentially making use of space on or in the appliances, e.g.
by having a soap dispenser on the sink itself or including a rack for
toiletries within the steam shower itself.
Be bold with functional items
There are some items which are just standard
must-haves in any bathroom, for purely practical reasons.
These would include the likes of toilet brush holders, toilet paper holders, toothbrush holders and towel racks.
Instead of trying to sneak these items
apologetically into your home, make them style statements which reflect your
taste and personality.
Whether you go
for sophisticated elegance or quirky humor, make your space your own.
As previously mentioned, accessories such as
these can be easily switched out if you change your mind or your taste later.
Learn the art of presentation
Hotels are experts at this and it’s a skill
which can come in useful in domestic bathrooms too.
Think about how you can take essential items,
which need to be kept in an easily-accessible place, and make them look good.
Towels are a classic example of this.If a towel is on a holder then instead of
just leaving it any old way, take the time to make it look attractive.
You may find that guests take the hint and
put it back as they found it, if not, it should be simple enough to fix.
If towels are being stored in the bathroom
then either put them into concealed storage or store them in a way which looks
attractive, while keeping them accessible.
The easiest way to do the latter is usually to roll them neatly and
stack them.
This is what beauty salons
often do.
Conceal in plain sight
There is a huge difference between using open
storage and having everything open to view.
Look for stylish and bathroom-friendly storage containers to hold items
you want (or need) to keep in your bathroom.
If necessary, you can put labels on them so it’s clear what the contents
are (label makers are great for organized homes, but neat handwriting will do
just fine), visually it will still look good.
Remember, you can make use of items from anywhere in the home, as long
as they can cope with the bathroom environment.
Kitchen items can be a great choice, for example cookie jars and canisters can easily be repurposed to hold bathroom items in a way which is both fun and
functional.
Keep functionality in mind at all times
Think about how you use your bathroom and,
where possible, use decoration to enhance functionality.
For example, instead of just using room
sprays or scented candles, use an oil or wax burner (either with candles or
battery operated as long as it’s safe for the bathroom).
This can be used to combat odors as well as
to enhance appliances such as steam showers by adding an element of
aromatherapy, plus it looks decorative too.
